I am in the process of switching all my battery-powered devices over to the AA- and AAA-sized eneloop batteries by Sanyo. Unlike regular NiMH batteries, they hold their charge well for a long time. This makes them suitable for marine and aviation handheld radios, which are usually backup radios and don't get frequent use. They also shine in regular rechargeable applications, such as large camera flashes like the Nikon SB600 and SB800, and have the additional advantage of not being dead when you need them just because you didn't charge them right before you left for your kid's school Christmas play. Ask me how I know. Oh, and I'm using the La Crosse BC-700 charger, which works great and gives better feedback on charge status than many other chargers.
