Lithium Air: IBM's quest for the super-battery

The days of $1.50 gasoline are long gone, and high costs coupled with environmental concerns have ignited a search for the battery that will power the cars of the future. IBM is at the forefront of this effort with its development of the lithium air super-battery. The goal "is to create a battery that will power the typical family car about 500 miles between recharges," explains Winfried Wilcke, Senior Manager, Nanoscale Science and Technology with IBM. "Today's batteries...fall short of this goal by quite a factor, with [the best batteries] only lasting approximately 200 to 240 miles." Bridging this gap requires drastically increasing the battery's energy density by making it lighter. IBM reduces the weight by getting rid of the heavy transition metal oxides like cobalt oxide or manganese oxide and replacing them with a lightweight, high-surface carbon structure. The lithium air battery represents "the highest energy density of any imaginable system," says Wilcke, "but it's not easy to do. It's a long-term project currently in its early science phases, but in the last six or seven months we have gotten a lot of positive results, which make me cautiously optimistic that this can actually work." Wilcke hopes to have a lithium air battery in cars by 2020. A battery that could power a car for 500 miles would certainly be worth the wait. Parkzone P51D Ferocious Frankie Brushless and Lipo Conversion Maiden

The Parkzone P51D Ferocious Frankie is one beautiful bird so a geared brushless motor and Lipo upgrade not only improves performance but extends flight time as well. A 2815 4000 KV EDF motor was used as replacement. The metal pinion was soldered to the motor shaft and a round metal washer placed between the motor and the housing to strengthen the mount. By design the model needs a lot of air speed or it will stall. Get the "replacement fuselage" from Advantagehobby-dot-com and do the mods yourself. After some practice will come the rolls, Cuban 8's and low passes ... like the real Ferocious Frankie...

1920 Stanley Steamer w/1916 Woods Dual Power Body blooper

This is a 1920 Stanley Steamer 735 that was re-bodied with a 1916 Woods Dual Power body sometime in the 20's. This car stands at an amazing 7' 3" tall. This was one of Barney Pollards car which he sold at one of his auctions in 1977. BJ Pollard is stamped into the front frame rail. I have the documentation from the auction. This car is a wonderful original example of an early marriage of chassis and body. The Condenser, hood and firewall are Stanley. The body and fenders are 1916 Woods Dual Power. The car has a real character to it, and it seats two (with a jump seat for a third passenger). The body is aluminum, fenders and hood steel. The wood in the car is perfect. 25" wheels with 35X5 tires. Just look at the size of this car. She's a runner with a forced air burner! When are you ready to start the car, you get in and pump up your fuel pressure with the hand pump which simultaneously pumps water in the boiler (close valve if water not needed). Once fuel pressure is up, you simply hit a switch on the column and your fired. Three actions happen when that switch is turned on. 1) Blower motor kicks on, 2) Ignition source kicks on, 3) Magnetic solenoid releases the fuel to the burner...fuel under pressure from pumping. Very similar to a home furnace. I am currently using a 2.5 gallon nozzle and burning Kerosene. There are a two pressure switches built into the system. One of them assures that at least 60lbs of fuel pressure is at the pressure switch before allowing the 3 ...

Independent research shows that around 80 percent of Europeans drive less than 60 kilometers per day, so the Ampera easily meets their requirements. For the first 40 - 80 kilometers (depending on terrain, driving style, and temperature), power is supplied by the electricity stored in the 16 kWh, lithium-ion battery. While driving on electricity delivered by the battery, the Ampera moves free of gas and tailpipe emissions. If a longer trip is required, the gasoline fueled engine can seamlessly extend the total driving range to more than 500 kilometers on a full tank. This full performance, range extending technology makes the Ampera the first electric car with the everyday convenience of a conventional automobile.
